Ontario graduate student scholarship

The Ontario graduate student scholarship is offered by the Government of Ontario and is available to graduate students in all disciplines. 


It provides funding of up to $15,000 per year for master’s students and up to $30,000 per year for doctoral students. 

International students are eligible, and the scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence and research potential.

Scholarship Description 

The Ontario graduate student scholarship (OGS) is a merit-based scholarship program funded by the Government of Ontario and administered by Ontario’s publicly-assisted universities. 


It is available to graduate students in all disciplines, including Masters and Doctoral programs.

Scholarship Value

The OGS provides funding of up to $15,000 per year for Master’s students and up to $30,000 per year for Doctoral students.

Eligibility Criteria for the Ontario graduate student scholarship

  • Must be in at least the second year of a Master’s program or the third year of a Doctoral program.
  • Must have achieved a minimum of A- (80% or equivalent) in each of the last two completed years of study or equivalent academic standing.
  • Must be conducting research that is relevant to Ontario.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or international student with a valid study permit.

The OGS application process typically involves two main steps:

  • Step 1: Apply to an eligible Ontario university: if you are interested, you need to apply for admission to a graduate program at one of the participating universities in Ontario.

Universities can withdraw their participation anytime (if they wish), so you need to confirm from the school if they are still participating before starting your application.

  • Step 2: Submit the OGS application: Once admitted to a graduate program, you can submit your OGS application through the online application system provided by Ontario University. 

The application usually requires the submission of personal information, academic transcripts, research proposal, reference letters, and other supporting documents. 

You need to submit a complete and well-prepared application by the deadline specified by the university.

Selection Process

The selection process for the OGS is highly seamless and involves a review of the applications by a selection committee. 

Applications are assessed based on academic excellence, level of financial need, research potential, leadership skills, and other relevant criteria. 

Successful applicants will be notified by the university regarding the outcome of their application.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for the OGS varies depending on the participating university. 

Generally, the deadline falls between late fall and early winter for the following academic year. 

You can check the specific deadline of the university you are applying to and submit your application well before the deadline.

If you submit your application after the deadline, it won’t be considered.
